The main point of this group is two-fold - to be green, environmentally sustainable, low carbon and all that, and also to demonstrate how we can do that to the public. Being green is not easy, otherwise society wouldn't be in this mess. Together, we figure we can work out the best and most effective ways to be sustainable, and then do it and measure it.
We'll develop activities that we know work and that we know people are able to achieve realistically. We don't want to burn ourselves out trying to save the world, but we do want to be smart about it.
Then we want local councils and businesses to get involved to open up the opportunities there. There is so much that can be done together - improving our own lives, this group and our community through product and material re-use, re-purposing, recycling, better shopping and eating, energy and water efficiency gains, carbon footprint reduction, caring for nature and the built environment.
Eventually we want to replicate the group in other places.
It means we have to measure how good we are, mainly in terms of our carbon footprint but using other measures as well, so we are developing a technical approach to making that as simple as possible. We're starting off small and on a shoestring, but as we grow we aim to set up a mobile phone app to handle this.
We also intend to focus quite heavily on keeping ourselves, each other and observers motivated in ways that help develop teamwork, goals, commitment and mutual accountability.
